- Overview

Chemical biology is the study of chemical substances and chemical reactions involved in biological processes, including disciplines such as bioorganic chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, and pharmacology. 

Chemical biology is a field of research that applies chemical creativity to answer complex basic and clinical questions, a bridging science that transcends the chemistry-biology-medicine continuum. The impact of chemical biology on translational science is most evident in cancer, where chemical biology, combined with genomics and other large-scale analyses, is translating genomic insights into targeted therapies. 

Chemical biology deals with how to apply chemistry to solve biological problems, while biochemistry is the study of biological chemistry. Generally, chemical biology majors focus on small molecules, while biochemistry majors focus on proteins and nucleic acids.
